St Uny's churchyard burials
Maxwell Adams Copyright 2004-2021
Version 2021
Many of these gravestones are much weathered. I have included here only those of which the inscriptions
are readable or at which I can make a reasonable hazard. I have put in parentheses particularly difficult readings.
The gravestones cover the years from 1784 with the large majority in the nineteenth century.
I have put in entries from JH Matthews (1892, 96-98) A history of the parishes of St Ives, Lelant, Towednack,
and Zennor which are not now visible or legible in the churchyard, and these are marked at the forename or
relevant data with an asterisk *.There are inaccuracies in some of those recorded in Matthews which are still
visible and readable.
Several graves in the Western and Eastern cemeteries refer to people, often children, "buried in the old churchyard."
I have added the names of those so interred here and marked them with a hash # and in the Notes put the relevant
cemetery initial, W or E, in which they are commemorated. Each has only one identical PIN for both burial ground entries.
Additional information is given at the end for those marked +
There are also memorial tablets in this churchyard marking the ashes of people who have been cremated. They are
recorded separately.
I have put at the end several names of people commemorated on death plaques within the church building itself. These are also
listed in Joseph Polsue (1870) Parochial history of the county of Cornwall, volume 3.
There is a plaque in the church which says that "this electric light" was installed Christmas 1928 in memory of William John TAYLOR,
head of the national School and a churchwarden.

Sister is not abbreviated. I have recorded only relationships referred to in the grave inscriptions.

Age: at death as recorded on the gravestone.
n:a relational name on the gravestone but not buried there.
Additional comments on the inscriptions
BOSUSTOW 1329-1333
The gravestone of Margaret BOSUSTOW also has on it WB 43 1825, EB 31 1827, AB 54 1828, and
NB 25 1828. I have entered these as Bosustow, as in the parish register. JH Matthews (1892, 97) records
the death date and age of William Bosistow (sic) 1328. Trewman's Exeter Flying Post of 1 May 1828
records the death at Lelant of "Mrs Bosustow" from a "paralytic seizure": no death date given but presumably April 1828.
The Selector or Cornish magazine July 1827 records the death in May 1827 of "Miss SE Bosustow," presumably 1330.
BOSUSTOW Nanny 1332
The Royal Cornwall Gazette of 5 July 1828 records her death at Mennabilly Farm on 20 June 1828 of consumption,
describing her as the youngest daughter of William Bosustow.
CHALMERS Augusta Mary 1350
The gravestone says: MC aged 24 buried at Morro Velho, Brazil 1885. She died 7 August 1885 and was
buried in the English Cemetery at Morro Velho.

CURGENVEN Richard 1388
JH Matthews (1892, page 97) says: "fixed against the south wall of the tower," where it still is today
FARQUHARSON William 1437
There is a broken slab which reads "William Farquharson" and aged "6 months". Nothing more remains.
This is probably Matthews's 1437.
GLASSON
No graves visible in the churchyard; they are commemorated on the Christopher/Glasson grave in W
which gives the details recorded in this database
HALL Richard 1437
JH Matthews says (1892, 98) he is recorded with a slate on the west wall of the tower. This slate is
not now there.

HOSKING 1406-1421
JH Matthews (1892, page 96) records the slab, now largely illegible, as it is engraved, a series of initials
and dates and ages:JH, AH, HH, etc. The surname initial H stands for Hosking.
HOW 1438, 1439
JH Matthews records "on the wall by the south gate of the churchyard is a piece of granite
bearing the inscription JB; S How; 1801". It is not there now.
KEMP Elizabeth 1424
JH Matthews (1892, page 97) says "Elizabeth Kemp and others of the family" and "of the end of
the last century," ie the end of the eighteenth century

The gravestone says she died at Rose-an-Grouse and was late of Liverpool
PENBERTHY Anne E 1512, Hannah J 1511, James 1513, Margaret 1514, Richard 1515, and Thomas 1516
These are the Penberthy people commemorated on grave 32 in the Eastern Cemetery as:
Annie Elizabeth died 1871 aged 9
Hannah Jane died 1870 aged 1
James died 1874 aged 68
Thomas James died 1860 aged 19
Margaret Ann died 1872 aged 27
Richard died 1873 aged 35
Family details are on the Eastern Cemetery list.
POOL Mary, Eldred, and Louisa 1247-1249
The dates and ages are given in Roman numerals in Gothic script and the gravestone is weathered.
It is hard to make out the numbers.
RICHARDS Elizabeth 1345
The gravestone says: Widow of the above [Thomas JOHNS 1344] and lately of Hugh RICHARDS [1347]
